A model home showing how a low cost passive solar "wall" can increase home temperature during the harsh mountain winter
Working with a University group in Lima dedicated to developing and integrating practical technologies into poor and indigenous areas, we will fund modification of 5 homes each in 3 communities high in the Andes. These modifications will demonstrate to others in these communities how to make simple changes to increase the warmth of their homes through passive solar heating, and to improve their heating efficiency. The air quality of their homes—and therefore their health—will be improved by the introduction of simple cooking stoves that include the previously unknown concept of a chimney.
